Frederic Knapp business and military papers, 1857-1883.

Knapp, a native of New Britain, Connecticut, was postmaster of that town before being appointed the first provost marshal for Connecticut in 1861, and subsequently chief clerk and inspector. In his later life, he was noted as an accountant. The papers in this collection represent the latter two aspects of his life. From his role as provost, there is correspondence--some about deserters--forms, orders, lists and reports, memorandum books, and a draft of his publication "Methods of Filling the Army." Among his other papers are business correspondence, additional memoranda books, records of bankruptcy cases, a statement of assets and liabilities for the Hartford Steam Saw Mill Company, and records from other financial cases with which he must have been involved. Also includes dance cards and rewards of merit kept by Knapp's son Harry Shepard Knapp.
